THE BOOK LOVERS - THE NOVEL AS FANTASY
(CCA UJAZDOWSKI CASTEL WARSAW)

January 2016–December 2017

I am dead. My body has been found in 2014, somewhere between Los Angeles and Warsaw, dismembered. The labels of the clothes, fingerprints, and the number on the shoes have been carefully unstitched, deleted, washed, bleached, and delivered to oblivion. Nothing can be used for identification. Only clue, in a secret pocket sewn inside my trousers, detectives have recovered a fragile piece of paper torn from the pages of a book, written there, the words Tamam Shud, ‘this is the end’. Experts and antiquaries were consulted: those are the last two words with which ends theRubaiyat, an ancient book of esoteric poems by the Persian erudite Omar Khayyam.

Alex Cecchetti’s art project, Tamam Shud, has been selected to be produced in the framework of The Novel As Fantasy. CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw and The Book Lovers proudly announce the result of the open call for the creation of a new artist’s novel, and wish to thank everyone who took part of it by sending their enthusiastic proposals. After a careful selection process, Tamam Shud is called to be a new artist’s novel to be released at the end of 2017.

What the hell have I to do with poetry and secret pockets? I don’t even know how to stitch a button.
Murder, accident, suicide, detectives haven’t found anything relevant, my identity is still unknown and me also, I don’t remember much.

Collective incantations, disappearing paintings, flower artificial hybridisation, guided tours of heaven and hell, are just some of the clues that Alex Cecchetti progressively will disseminate through an episodic structure in which a series of performances, exhibitions and other artistic events blend into the writing process and vice versa. Please save the date: 13 May 2016, for the public launch of the Tamam Shud project in CCA Ujazdowski Castle Warsaw. More information will follow soon.

To die without memories, this is the horror. You know, life is short, but death never ends. And now I have no one to love and no one to hate for the eternity. This is why I have decided to investigate over my own death myself.

DOINGS & KNOTS

24th November 2015 - 10th of January 2016.

Curated by Margit Säde Lehni.

ARTISTS: do it (HUO & ICI), LOOP, Konstanet, Anna Škodenko, Liina Pääsuke, Rafaël Rozendaal, Esther Mathis, Nicole Bachmann, Roland Roos, Jürg Lehni & Alex Rich, George Steinmann, Dora García, Cesare Pietroiusti, Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Aaloe-Ader-Flo-Soosalu, Alex Cecchetti, Quim Pujol, Olof Olsson, Cia Rinne, Hanne Lippard, Audrey Cottin.

'DOings & kNOTs' is a group exhibition based on the artistic project 'do it', which was initiated by Hans Ulrich Obrist in 1993 and was on display at the Tallinn Art Hall in 1997. This open exhibition model collects written instructions by artists, each of which could be interpreted anew every time they are enacted. The 'do it' project, which is being hosted today by Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York, has undergone a fundamental change in terms of its institutionalisation and organisation. Hence “DOings & kNOTs”, which was initially planned to be about instructions in art, became more about the impossibility of following instructions, rules or a given formula. What is an instruction after all? An assignment? A command? A poem?

MAISON DE LA POÉSIE
SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2015 9PM
PASSAGE MOLIÈRE
157, RUE SAINT-MARTIN - 75003 PARIS

Alex Cecchetti knows that “a story is an object, but one that does not take any space for storage, or not as much as a painting or a sculpture.” Indeed, the story ofMarie and William, a performance by the artist, assumes the shape of a book. The content—photography, drawings, and captions—is stylishly arranged on the pages, visually akin to a collage—scanned, not 3D-printed. The story is rendered flat, but like so many stories captured in surfaces, it deals with movement. Think of a dance manual, or a script made of stills. In fact, does not even know it is a book, it thinks itself to be a record on a turn table.”

SERRALVES FOUNDATION

THE MUSEUM AS PERFORMANCE

FROM 19 SEP 2015 TO 20 SEP 2015

ALEX CECCHETTI, ANASTASIA AX & LARS SILTBERG, ISABEL CARVALHO, KOVÁCS/O’DOHERTY, LORETO MARTÍNEZ TRONCOSO, MARIA HASSABI, MUSA PARADISIACA, NEW NOVETTA, VIVO.

First edition of a new field of programming of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, entitled "Museum as Performance”, which consists of a programme of performances that will take place annually in its various spaces.

This programme recognises the growing importance of the performing arts in the world of contemporary art and contributes to secure the history of Serralves as a pioneering museum in terms of transdisciplinary initiatives, characterised by constant intersections between the visual and performing arts, and the regular presence of leading international figures from the worlds of dance, the performing arts and contemporary music. The invitation to artists to inject life into the museum’s spaces also reflects Serralves’ interest in working with artists whose work responds to its unique architectural context and natural surroundings.

This programme aims to reflect the diversity of current perspectives about current performing arts – from work on language, exploration of the relationship with theatre (through attention to the spoken word, and also incorporation of props), connections and tensions between physical action and drawing or sculpture, questioning of the autonomy of the impacts of a performance as an installation and memory and the long-term construction of relationships with the architectural and acoustical space.

"Museum as Performance” is curated by Cristina Grande, Ricardo Nicolau and Pedro Rocha - who are, respectively, the programmers of dance and performance, the visual arts and music of Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art.

The printing house of hell

Opening Saturday 27 June 2015
Tour guide of heaven and hell at 5pm
Private view 6.30 to 9pm

Exhibition continues to 15 August

Dear William,
The work at the printing house never stops.
When we have ink we find no paper, when we have paper we find no words, when we have words they have no meanings, when we find meanings they make no sense.
All the L's turn out to be noses, all the M's rise up as mountains, Q's are cherries and olives andB's are gorgeous and generous breasts.
We are good for nothing some say, we really are indeed. We cherish it and feed it, pet it and put it to sleep.
Vigil we keep on the working at the printworks of hell, for the mouth of the feral nothing shall not shut all over the earth.

Summer Is Not The Prize of Winter
4-06-2015 ; 7pm
