Episode 4: Reading the Unwritten is a new instalment in Alex Cecchetti’s ongoing artist’s novel, Tamam Shud. It is also a two-part event. Firstly, David Maroto and Joanna Zielińska (The Book Lovers) will open with a theoretical introduction to artist's novels. Writer and curator Francis McKee, who recently published his first novel, Even the Dead Rise Up (Book Works, 2017), will join them in a public discussion about how to situate the practice of artist's novels in the field of the visual arts.
The programme continues with Alex Ceccheti. A new chapter of Tamam Shud will be written in a live performance by means of a tarot card reading. Whilst writing is a process that normally happens out of public view, in the solitude of the writer’s studio, Alex’s art project renders this process visible. The production of the narrative is conceived as an event where writing is exposed and interwoven with the artistic process.
For one evening, the artist Alex Cecchetti is offering an immersion into his very own interstellar, magical world. sheltered inside large “tent-curtains”, artists give tarot readings or dance to the sound of a piano. Further off, a glass harp accompanies a choir inspired by whale song, while Cécilia Bengolea dances amidst the audience on Alex Cecchetti’s poems. The evening ends with a moment of exchanges between the artists and the public.

At the same time visual artist, poet and choreographer, Alex Cecchetti an artist of Italian origin produces interactive performances and indefinable objects which can be exhibited in galleries or elsewhere.
He draws his inspiration from literature, philosophy, science and music in a playful way and with a great sense of humour. Whether it is a stand-up comedy about death, a backward walk in a botanical garden or a “visit to the Louvre without the Louvre”, each performance is a unique experience shared with his audience. Observers are seduced by his poetic language and gestures, which lead them to explore rituals and journeys where perception and great existential questions are put into play.

Hand and Mind is an exhibition and series of performances testing connections between the realms of speech and gesture, curated by Vanessa Boni. Through painting, sculpture, choreography and performance they unsettle political, personal and theoretical channels of communication.

Conversation of the Arrows by Alex Cecchetti is a choreography for sorcerer’s apprentices, in which a dancer and a word-crafter fall into the trap of representation. They are doomed to chase each other represented as dogs, arrows, birds, stones, stars. For a moment, Cecchetti’s sculptures, become the spells that the apprentices cast against each other and the scenario for their labyrinthic roaming.

Alex Cecchetti has developed a unique practice that could be called art of avoidance: tactical and poetic, its system leads to produce situations or objects that can exist both inside and outside the exhibition.
‘Belladonna’ is based on his own previous performance ‘Walking Backwards’, which took place in the garden of Jardins des Plantes in Paris and at Serralves Foundation, as well as on a related film as a collection of stories of trees and plants narrated in that occasion.

A man has been found dead and his identity is unknown. The label from his clothes, his fingerprints, his shoe size, none of it can be used to identify him. His only connection with the rest of the world is a small scrap of paper hidden in a secret pocket sewn into his trousers. It contains the last words of a Persian poem: Tamam Shud. In an alternative tour, with storytelling, stand-up comedy and opera, Alex Cecchetti wanders around the museum halls looking for his identity. Cecchetti’s intimate performances use exceptional stories that the audi- ence experiences both mentally and physically.

Tamam Shud is conceived and designed for Raum in three languages -as many sets of the story- in a schizophrenic identity vortex worn by the same author. The performance is a post mortem investigation of the victim on his own assassination. In this dark and grotesque stand-up comedy the artist is accompanied by two singers.

Experts and antiquaries were consulted: those are the last two words with which ends the Rubaiyat, an ancient book of esoteric poems by the Persian erudite Omar Khayyam. NUOVO MONDO: Tour Guide of Heaven and Hell is the third episode in Alex Cecchetti’s ongoing artist’s novel, Tamam Shud. It is also is a performative seminar on poetry, a walk through the concentric circles that descend and ascend through the building of the Królikarnia Palace in Warsaw. Alex Cecchetti will accompany the public through these narrow passages where artists embody poems. What is hell for many can be heaven for some.
Until December 2017, Alex Cecchetti develops a new artist’s novel through tools such as performances, exhibitions, and public editorial readings. Lost memories, recovered traces, and the first investigations to solve the mystery are some of the elements that will signal the beginning of the creative process. Please join us for the public launch of Alex Cecchetti’s art project Tamam Shud. Until December 2017, the artist will be developing a new artist’s novel by means of tools such as performances, exhibitions and public editorial readings. Lost memories, recovered traces, and the first investigations to solve the mystery are some of the elements that will signal the beginning of the creative process. Tamam Shud: When Everything Is so Clean it Is Difficult to Remember Something is the first episode in which a contralto (Wanda Franek), a countertenor (Michał Sławecki) and a glass harp music players (GlassDuo) will join Alex Cecchetti in the investigations. Follow us in this series of events, and note down that the next episode is coming in the Fall.

Alex Cecchetti’s art project, Tamam Shud, has been selected to be produced in the framework of The Novel As Fantasy. CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw and The Book Lovers proudly announce the result of the open call for the creation of a new artist’s novel, and wish to thank everyone who took part of it by sending their enthusiastic proposals. After a careful selection process, Tamam Shud is called to be a new artist’s novel to be released at the end of 2017.

Collective incantations, disappearing paintings, flower artificial hybridisation, guided tours of heaven and hell, are just some of the clues that Alex Cecchetti progressively will disseminate through an episodic structure in which a series of performances, exhibitions and other artistic events blend into the writing process and vice versa. 'DOings & kNOTs' is a group exhibition based on the artistic project 'do it', which was initiated by Hans Ulrich Obrist in 1993 and was on display at the Tallinn Art Hall in 1997. This open exhibition model collects written instructions by artists, each of which could be interpreted anew every time they are enacted. The 'do it' project, which is being hosted today by Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York, has undergone a fundamental change in terms of its institutionalisation and organisation. Hence “DOings & kNOTs”, which was initially planned to be about instructions in art, became more about the impossibility of following instructions, rules or a given formula. What is an instruction after all? An assignment? A command? A poem?

First edition of a new field of programming of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, entitled "Museum as Performance”, which consists of a programme of performances that will take place annually in its various spaces.
This programme recognises the growing importance of the performing arts in the world of contemporary art and contributes to secure the history of Serralves as a pioneering museum in terms of transdisciplinary initiatives, characterised by constant intersections between the visual and performing arts, and the regular presence of leading international figures from the worlds of dance, the performing arts and contemporary music. The invitation to artists to inject life into the museum’s spaces also reflects Serralves’ interest in working with artists whose work responds to its unique architectural context and natural surroundings.
This programme aims to reflect the diversity of current perspectives about current performing arts – from work on language, exploration of the relationship with theatre (through attention to the spoken word, and also incorporation of props), connections and tensions between physical action and drawing or sculpture, questioning of the autonomy of the impacts of a performance as an installation and memory and the long-term construction of relationships with the architectural and acoustical space.
"Museum as Performance” is curated by Cristina Grande, Ricardo Nicolau and Pedro Rocha - who are, respectively, the programmers of dance and performance, the visual arts and music of Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art.
